Description

A comparison of the sound quality of three powered pairs of speakers for computers (and various other types of audio equipment).
The picture shows the approximate size differences, with the Audioengine 2 on the front left, the Altec Lansing VS2420 on the front right, and the Edirol MA-7A in the background.

Considerations

Evaluation

By connecting each of the pairs of speakers to a selector switch unit, we were able to switch from one to the other with music and other sound continuing for evaluation.
Comparison of 3 speaker systems
Feature Edirol MA-7A Audioengine 2 Altec Lansing VS2420
Over-all sound quality Best all-round sound – highs and lows, and crisp. Much better on bass, although somewhat muffled. Covered more highs than lows, but without the quality of either of the others.
Use for monitoring audio, including music, at the computer Good. Good. Good.
For more serious listening in a room, or even computer station venue Pleasing sound. Pleasing sound. Not as good as the other two.

The decision between these would need to be made by the individual, based on his tastes and needs.
• The Edirol is perhaps the best value, at nearly $100 a pair.
• The Altec Lansing is much better than the average small computer speaker (though not having as high a sound quality as the other two), in the range of $29
• There is much good to be said for the Audioengine, even at nearly $200.
The available power source may also be a factor. (Some are designed only for ~120 VAC. See the individual reviews.)
